THE IDEA

The “exquisite corpse” (Cadavre exquis in French) is a collective game invented by the Surrealists. The idea is to compose a text or a drawing by different persons. The trick is that none of them can see what has been already written or drawn. This game has been used with texts, drawings, even cinema. On the other hand, we couldn't find any application in the textile / sewing domain and we decided to explore the “texquisite corpse” (cadavre texquis) in 2014.

The purpose of the Texquisite corpse is to create collectively a creature, which bears a name. Each participant will add an element, based on a restrictive rule, without knowing who worked on the creature before or will after. For our project, we were 8 participants and 8 creatures have been therefore created. Each of us added an element. Six steps wereundertaken with a rule and the first and last without. Each of us created 6 rules. All of them were them put in a bag and at each step, we would pick out one of them.

The choice of material, technics and tools were totally free, except if a rule specified it. There were also no minimum skill requirements, except maybe to be able to hold a needle…

The Texquisite corpse is a game whose rules can vary a lot depending on the choice of the participants. It will also give a different result each time.  Get started !!!
